Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A severe storm hit the Gopalnagar Bairampur Gram Panchayat area in North 24 Parganas on Monday evening, causing extensive damage to homes, trees, and crops. In Sonekopur village, around 30 houses were damaged within a 30 to 35-minute period of heavy rain and strong winds. The storm uprooted numerous trees, leading to disruption of electricity supply across the village. Local authorities began clearing fallen trees early Tuesday morning to restore access and safety.
Ujjwal Adhikari, a resident near Gopalnagar station, reported that a large banyan tree fell on his house while he and his family were inside, but they were able to evacuate safely with the children. According to Haider Ali Molla, leader of the Bairampur Gram Panchayat, the storm caused damage to 30 houses and uprooted many trees in the area. He also noted significant losses in agriculture, with sesame, pointed gourd, and banana crops being affected.
Discussions have been held with the Block Development Officer (BDO) to arrange assistance for the affected residents. Efforts to restore electricity and clear debris are ongoing as the administration works to address the damage caused by the storm.
